To support our sister campus organization Cardinal PR, a team from PRSSA entered the campus-wide Cupcake Wars event that took place Thursday November 14, at 7 p.m. in Yokum Hall. This tasteful competition (in both visual and edible senses) left everyone on the edge of their seats as the judges evaluated the baked goods.
Fourteen teams took part. Director of Career Development Center Tracey Cross-Baker, Public Relations Professor Colleen Lemza and First Weekends in Plattsburgh Inc. Representative Leigh Simonette judged the teams on their cupcake creations.
Our team, Sgt. Pepper’s 2nd Lonely Hearts Club, created Beatles inspired cupcakes and took a psychedelic route when creating the delicious treats. The base of the cupcakes was devils food cake. The body of the cupcakes had a blue and purple swirled, tie-dye themed icing design with silver and glitter sprinkles representing the galaxy, and one reading “Lucy” in cursive. Out of the two-dozen cupcakes prepared, four portrayed a silhouette of each of the Beatles. As a whole, the batch of cupcakes portrayed the song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” Our team was influenced by a quote about the song meaning being about cupcakes, which was posted on the Facebook event page prior to the event:
While generally assumed to be about psychedelic drugs, John Lennon’s song Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds is actually about cupcakes. This came as a surprise to all Beatles scholars because it contains no mention of cupcakes or hidden references to them. John Lennon was later quoted in an interview, “You never know what you’re writing when you write a song, it’s only years later you realize the truth. You think you’re writing about other people, but you’re really writing about cupcakes. Goo goo ga joob. Imagine. Yoko Ono.”
This clever creation captured third place winning two gift cards to Scoops, PSUC’S ice cream dinning venue. The Men’s Track Team took second place with their chocolate peanut butter cupcakes, and Delta Phi Epsilon took first place with their yummy cannoli cupcakes. The experience was a fun one for all. Cupcake Wars was designed as a fun way to bring campus clubs and organizations together to socialize over a friendly competition with delicious treat, and indeed it did just that. Special thanks for Cardinal PR for hosting the event, PRSSA can’t wait to participate in next year’s Cupcake Wars!
