As my summer internship comes to an end, I’m looking back at all that I’ve learned since I started in May. This summer I interned at Mission Media in NYC, which is a PR agency. The agency works for multiple clients with fashion and foods and spirits teams. I work on the fashion team for clients Montblanc, J Crew and Arcadia – something that was entirely unexpected.
It’s pessimistic to say you don’t like something unless you try it, and it’s even worse to say you’re not good at something that you know nothing about. Fashion has always been an industry I said I would stay away from, not because I have something against it but because I honestly don’t know much about it. It also doesn’t help that I don’t have much interest in it. All of these things were my biggest challenges this summer, but like everything in life I found a way through it.
8 weeks later I can say I now know a thing or two about fashion, more specifically fashion PR. I know the importance of keeping track of all media hits your client receives. I know the great feeling of seeing some of the press requests you sent in to magazine editors featured in the weekly magazines. I know how stressful yet relieving working a successful press day event is. Most importantly, I was reminded of how valuable it is to keep the connections you make all throughout your life.
The greatest thing about internships is that you can experience all kinds of public relations, and see which field you’d like to pursue in the future. After interning at an agency I feel like that may not be the life for me, and that’s OK. It’s important to make the most of everything and make each experience a learning one. I definitely learned a lot this summer and I look forward to more internships in my future!
