My #PRSADay3 experience was very positive. This year we had a spectacular presenter lineup. I was pleased to hear the professionals speak with passion about their careers.
Nicole Buckley, Coordinator of event communications and player relations for the NHL and ’03 SUNY Plattsburgh alumna, travels all over the world in her career. Stephanie Dutton, assistant sports information director here at SUNY Plattsburgh and ’06 SUNY Plattsburgh alumna, took an atypical route to becoming a sports PR professional. David Alexander, assistant athletic director of communications at The College of Saint Rose, stressed the importance of being creative and writing. Writing, writing, writing, although our professors lecture us on writing, it doesn’t hit home until you hear it from the pros.
In addition to building on what we learn in class, these professionals fed my drive to becoming successful in this field. Although I’m not interested in sports PR myself, PRSA Day opened my eyes to the opportunities that different industries can give. The professionals were very understanding to all of the students’ questions and were welcoming when we spoke after their panel. I was particularly pleased with the support we received from our parent chapter, PRSA Capital Region. We had our professional adviser, Joslyn McArdle, the president of the chapter, Mike Lesczinski, and the programming co-chair, David Alexander.
The entire event is an amazing opportunity for advice and networking with professionals and I would recommend that every marketing, public relations and journalism student attends these events in the future. A little birdy told me that PRSA Day 2014 may focus on health public relations.
