SUNY Plattsburgh’s Public Relations Student Society of America was proud to welcome alumna Vicki Marking to its general meeting Wednesday, April 10.
Vicki Marking has been in the PR field for 16 years and is currently the marketing director at Primelink Telecommunications. Marking is also an adjunct professor here at SUNY Plattsburgh, where she teaches a class on writing for public relations, a first for the PR department.
Marking spoke about her professional experience, the blurring lines between PR and marketing, and the importance of writing skills for success in PR. Marking explained that the job of a PR professional is not what it used to be. It is now more important than ever to be multi-dimensional in order to succeed. Today, a PR professional must “wear many hats”, whereas in the past, the positions of graphic designer, marketing manager, and PR manager would have been handled by three separate people.
Marking spoke in-depth on the importance of writing skills for PR professionals, stressing that the only way to get better is to practice. Not only is it important to be able to write good press releases, but other skills are necessary as well such as speech writing, writing for internal communication and basic email writing. Marking emphasized that these skills can make all the difference.
It’s the PRSSA’s goal to provide members with resources that will help them in their careers. Guest speakers like Vicki Marking provide valuable information for students that they would not have otherwise.
