Going into my senior year of college I've come to the realization that the real world is approaching quickly. Once I graduate I don't know what I want to do, but I have a lot in mind. I want to do so much and I want to do it as soon as I leave Plattsburgh. But I know it is a rare occurrence that someone will land an awesome job doing exactly what they want immediately after college. This summer I have the amazing opportunity of interning at Estee Lauder. Being one of the largest make-up corporation in the world owning huge brands like MAC, Clinque, Bobbi Brown and more, it is difficult to land a spot anywhere within the company. I am lucky enough to have connections in the Melville offices on Long Island conveniently very close to where I live, making it an easy commute. I intern in the Global Supplier Relations department or Procurement Operations, which is fancy for purchasing. This is where Estee Lauder buys the tubes, caps, brushes that the make-up comes in when you buy it in the store. My tasks this summer included general data entry, document formatting, updating contacts, and learning the basics to the company's supplier portal where purchases take place. I still do not fully comprehend the vocabulary used here, nor do I expect to in the next couple of weeks, so I constantly ask questions in hopes of understanding. I've learned that it is extremely important to ask questions and learn something new every day.
Being here for two months in the summer really opened my eyes to what the professional work environment looks and feels like. I really liked the feeling of the employees using and appreciating the updated documents I spent a lot of time on and seeing my name next to my work on the internal portal. This internship has given me a valuable experience with professionals who were able to guide and teach me the inner works of the purchasing department. I know a little better now the standards and expectations of the professional world. I also really enjoyed participating in casual summer Friday's where we are allowed to wear jeans and leave an hour early than usual. Experiencing my first office pizza party was also very exciting. I can't wait to bring what I learned with me here back to Plattsburgh in my classes and in PRSSA. I am more than grateful for this opportunity and the fact that I can put this on the top of my resume gives me the extra boost of confidence I need to venture off in the real world next year.
